RapidExtract

Embedded files, returned to you.

Get the PDFs and other files your Windows colleagues embed in Excel, Word and PowerPoint documents, in seconds, on your Mac.

RapidExtract is in final testing. Write to us and we'll let you know when it's available.

Illustration, not a screenshot

The icon you can't open

In Office for Windows, people drag a PDF into a spreadsheet or document and it becomes an embedded object: a little icon that opens the file when you double-click it.

Office for Mac shows the icon but can't open many of these objects. The file is right there inside the document, and you still have to write back and ask for it.

RapidExtract gets it out

Open the document in RapidExtract and it finds every embedded file, recovers its original name where it can, and saves the ones you choose as ordinary files you can open, forward and file away.

No Windows machine, no virtual machine, no upload to a conversion website.

How it works

  1. Open the document

Drop an Excel, Word or PowerPoint file on the window, or choose it with the button. You can also select it in the Finder and choose Extract Embedded Files from the Services menu.

  2. Review what's inside

RapidExtract lists every embedded and linked object in document order, with its name, type and any warnings.

  3. Save what you need

Select the files you want and save them to a folder, or as one ZIP archive. Nothing is changed in the original document.

It tells you what deserves caution

An embedded file can be anything, including something that runs code. RapidExtract points those out so you can decide. Warnings inform you; they never stop you from saving.

Executable or script

Files that can run code

Programs, scripts and shortcuts are flagged, whether RapidExtract recognizes them by their name or by their contents.

Macros

Macros, checked for real

For macro-enabled formats, RapidExtract reports whether macros were actually found, not just that the format allows them. It also flags macro code in files that shouldn't contain any.

Unrecognized

Objects it can't identify

When RapidExtract can't tell what an object contains, it says so, and suggests checking with the sender before opening it.

Linked

Linked files, never fetched

Some objects only point to a file somewhere else. RapidExtract lists them so you know they exist, but it never goes and gets them.

Your documents stay on your Mac

RapidExtract does all of its work on your Mac. It has no accounts, no analytics and no history of the documents you open, and it is built without permission to connect to the internet.

It can only read the files you choose and write to the places you choose to save. macOS enforces both limits.
